Kurri`s travel set-up

Everything we actually packed for driving across Europe. Gear for the moments outside: walks, small adventures, rest stops and exploring. And the gear that makes travel possible: carriers, litter, everyday essentials & everything that keeps Kurri and his family safe, comfortable and organized on long drives.

Currency

Card payments work almost everywhere on this route, but keep small cash for tolls. We recommend keeping some cash on hand if you plan to travel to more remote locations. Attractions, restaurants, and small guesthouses often accept cash only, and euros and US dollars are almost always accepted. If you plan to book accommodation on the go and want to try our walk-in method for finding pet-friendly places, be prepared to pay in cash. The same applies when buying fresh fruit and vegetables or local handicrafts on the road. Small roadside stalls and vendors often accept cash only.

SIM & Data

We install a new eSIM before crossing into a country, so there’s no queueing at kiosks and no hassle with activating it after you arrive. Note that some eSIMs need to be installed before entering a country, for example in Turkey. The validity period does not start when you install the eSIM, but only when you activate it by connecting to the local network. Here are some eSIMs we’ve tested ourselves, recommend, and have discount codes for:

Kurri - Pre-departure

Kurri's passport, 15+2xlitter, 120 cans, 2 kg dry food (2 zip bags), GPS tracker, health certificate, deworming, medical bag, harnesses and leashes, brush.

📍 Warsaw area

We stopped near Warsaw for the first night. It`s easier to find apartments that allow all pets without extra fees, which is our usual approach across the trip. Kurri had a quiet evening and woke up to his birthday the next morning 🎂

We found a room in a mountain house with a garden, so Kurri got to walk outside in cool mountain air after a long day in the car. Good birthday present.

📍 Transfăgărășan Road · The "Bears side"

We first drove Transfăgărășan in 2022: when we were still at the very beginning of Kurri`s training, and he only watched the place from the car. We started from the other side of the road back then, it was rainy and foggy and as we drove higher we literally arrived above the clouds. Everything was drifting, it felt dream-like, another world. One moment it was cold and the next, after the last tunnel, it turned sunny. This time it`s much more crowded, no clouds, but we came from the other side, where the bears are. So much had changed. More people, more noise, and at least 7 bear warnings on the way. We saw so many bears just relaxing by the road. Kurri's highlight was the grass near the highest point next to a waterfall - that's where he was happiest.

Kurri's Moment

Fresh mountain grass at the top, next to a waterfall. His favourite spot of the whole trip so far

Bear Warning

We saw bears just sitting by the road. Keep windows up and don't stop.
